Best Home Remedies for Severe Toothache Pain Relief

One of the most common dental problems that we experience is tooth ache. It can occur any time without any warning. If there is infection in the tooth or gum, you may also have swelling and tenderness around the infected area. The sharp and throbbing pain can make you crazy. Usually tooth aches tend to manifest at night, during the weekends or on holidays, when most dental clinics are closed. In such situations there are home remedies that can help you relieve pain till you visit the dentist.

Home Remedies for Toothache Relief:

Baking soda:

Baking soda can relieve any swelling because of its anti-inflammatory properties. The antibacterial property of baking soda can treat any tooth infection that is responsible for causing pain.

You need baking soda, water and cotton ball. Moisten the cotton ball with water and cover it with baking soda. Now place this cotton ball on the affected area to get rid of the pain.

You can also mix one heaped teaspoon of baking soda with little warm water and use this liquid as a mouth rinse.

Clove oil:

Clove oil contains a component called eugenol in it, which can provide you relief from toothache. You need 1 or 2 drops of clove oil for this treatment. Apply this oil directly on the tooth where you have pain and leave it. Let the oil stay in place. Don’t lick it off. You can apply this oil three to four times a day.

Ginger:

Ginger is great for providing you relief from the pain immediately. It has the ability to reduce any swelling and inflammation as well as the pain. Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin. This is great for treating pain.

You need a piece of ginger, 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, water and cotton ball for this treatment. Powder the ginger root and mix this powder with water and cayenne pepper, so that you get a thick paste. Dip a cotton ball into this paste in such a way that it is fully covered with the paste. Apply this cotton ball on your tooth. Leave it on your tooth for a few minutes. Repeat this when required. Make sure that you keep the cotton away from your gums as it can cause irritation.

Garlic clove:

Garlic is known for its medicinal properties. So, it is also good for tooth ache. It contains allicin, which has antimicrobial property. It can kill the infection causing microorganism and reduce the pain.

You need a clove of garlic and one teaspoon of rock salt for this treatment. Crush the clove of garlic and mix it with rock salt. Apply this paste on the affected area. Repeat twice a day.

Hydrogen peroxide:

Hydrogen peroxide is good for getting you relief from infection and the discomfort felt. This home remedy for toothache is very suitable when you have an infected tooth that causes a foul taste in your mouth as well as fever. This is only a temporary treatment for toothache like all other home remedies.

For this you need 30% hydrogen peroxide. Take it and rinse your mouth well with it. Now rinse your mouth with plain water to remove all traces of hydrogen peroxide. You can repeat this whenever required.

Olive oil:

Virgin olive oil contains phenolic compounds, which gives anti-inflammatory properties to olive oil. Dip a cotton ball in the oil and apply it over the affected part. You can repeat it twice or thrice a day.

Onion:

Onions have the ability to get you relief from the pain as well for killing the germs that are causing the pain.

You need a small raw onion for this treatment. Place this raw onion on the affected tooth and wait for a couple of minutes. Repeat twice a day.

Oregano oil:

Oregano oil has antiseptic and analgesic properties that help in reducing the pain and swelling. The component carvacrol present in oregano oil is responsible for this. It also kills the bacteria that for cause the pain.

For this you need oregano oil and Q-tip. Apply oregano oil directly on the affected area using Q-tip. Apply this after a few hours till the pain is gone.

Oil pulling:

Oil pulling is also called oil swishing therapy. It is used for treating tooth infections, bleeding gums, gingivitis and other oral problems. Coconut oil is great for this therapy as it contains lauric acid that has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

For this you need 1 to 2 to 3 teaspoons of coconut oil, warm water, toothpaste and toothbrush. Swish coconut oil in your mouth for about 20 minutes and then spit the oil out. Now rinse your mouth with warm water and then brush your teeth as usual. Use this twice daily till the pain is gone.

Tea bag:

Tea contains tannins that help in providing you relief from swelling and the pain. You need a tea bag and water for this. Wet the tea bag with some water and apply it on the tooth. If your tooth is not sensitive to cold, you can put the tea bag in ice water for some time and then apply it. Do this once or twice a day.

Vanilla extract:

The antiseptic and analgesic properties of vanilla extract makes it great for getting relief from toothache immediately. Apply it directly on the affected area with the help of a cotton swab. Repeat it when required.

Whiskey:

Whiskey is also very effective for providing you temporary relief from toothache.

For this you need whiskey or brandy and cotton ball. Soak the cotton ball in whiskey or brandy and apply it on your tooth. Keep replacing the cotton ball till you visit your dentist.

Warm salt water:

Warm salt water can reduce the swelling and also kill the bacteria that are harmful.

You need a glass of warm water and a teaspoon of salt for this. Dissolve the salt in warm water and then rinse your mouth with this. Repeat it twice or thrice a day.
