Waxing at Home

Cold Wax or Hot Wax:

Both are made of almost the same ingredients. They consist of a wax base, usually paraffin or bees wax, resin and a lubricator. The lubricator may be an oil or fat. The resin helps making the wax adhere to the hair strands, and the fat and oils make the removal of hair smooth.  To make the product more appealing to the customer, colour or fragrances are added. When you use hot wax, you will have to melt it first and then use. Cold wax is semi solid and you get it packed with the strips.

Here is a list of advantages and disadvantages of both the waxes, so that you can choose one that suits you.

Hot Wax:

Advantages:

  • Hot wax sticks to the hair better.
  • With a single application you can remove hair easily.

Disadvantages:

  • It is messy
  • Painful
  • You have to heat it to the right temperature or it can burn your skin.
  • You will have to apply it with a stick. This makes it hard to apply it on the upper lips and the eyebrows.

Cold Wax:

Advantages:

  • It comes packed with strips of many sizes and shapes so that it makes it easier for cleaning even your upper lips and eyebrows.
  • It is less painful.
  • Cold wax is cleaner than hot wax when using.

Disadvantages:

  • It does not adhere to hair as effectively as hot wax.
  • To get the desired results, you will have to apply it repeatedly. This can cause redness as well as irritation on the skin.

How to do waxing at home:

  • To wax, your hair must be at least 1/4th inch long.
  • You will have to clean well the area you wish to wax. Before you wax, put on some talcum powder or cornstarch on the surface of your skin.
  • Remember not to wax immediately after you have had a hot shower.
  • Use a plastic knife and spread the wax solution. The knife should not be sharp enough to cut your skin.
  • You can use a clean cotton cloth that is soft and washed for waxing.
  • Press it over the surface and then rub it back and forth for 2 or 3 times. Pull it off in the opposite direction.
  • If some hair strands still remain on your skin, you can press the cloth again on your skin and pull it off. Continue doing this till all the hair is removed.
  • Now you may take a shower and pat dry your skin.
  • Apply a toner to reduce inflammation. Next you can apply a good moisturizer liberally on the skin.

This process is a little painful but the result you get is great. With practice you can do it the right way.

If you are using the cold wax, here is how you can wax:

How to wax:

  • Take the wax strip and rub it between your palms till the wax gets warm.
  • Peel off the covering and place the strip on the desired area. Now rub a few times in the direction of hair.
  • Next you have to pull the strip in the direction opposite to the hair growth. You can repeat it till al hair is removed.

If your skin is sensitive and reacts badly to the wax and resin, or the fat in the wax, your skin may get irritated and red. In that case you can make wax at home.
